BIOGRAPHY

Educated at the Royal College of Art in London, with an MA in Fashion Menswear, Peter Johnston established a reputation for refined menswear design and bespoke tailoring early in his career. Specialising in men’s bespoke tailoring, he developed advanced expertise in pattern cutting, garment construction and sartorial styling, and became the first British entrant to win the Italian tailoring and design competition Ago D’Oro (Golden Needle), hosted by Brioni in Italy.

In 1995 he was appointed Head of Design at Kilgour, French & Stanbury, one of Savile Row’s most distinguished tailoring houses, where he redefined the bespoke offer, introduced an entry-level bespoke service and launched the house’s first ready-to-wear collections in London, New York and Tokyo. By 1998 he had taken on the role of Head of Design at Dunhill, London, with responsibility for the global direction of all branded and licensed collections, including the design of the Alfred Dunhill Links golf collection.

In 2003 he launched his eponymous label, PETER JOHNSTON, offering a bespoke tailoring service by private appointment in Scotland. In 2004 he was appointed Creative Director at Onward Kashiyama, Tokyo, collaborating with Isetan and Mitsukoshi department stores on a Peter Johnston ready-to-wear collection and bespoke service distributed throughout Japan.

In 2011 he became Creative Director for Saks Fifth Avenue, New York, introducing a collaborative Peter Johnston ready-to-wear collection and bespoke tailoring service across the United States. Today, in 2026, the PETER JOHNSTON brand is established as Scotland’s leading bespoke tailoring house, maintaining Savile Row craft standards while expressing a distinctly Scottish character.
