There are no shortcuts in the bespoke process.
And no compromises on fit, quality or craft.
A meticulous and deeply personal process.
Understanding the commission
Peter takes time to understand each client's requirements: the tailoring they wish to commission, the occasion it is for, and whether it will be worn in warmer or cooler climates. He then guides you through cloth selection and takes all necessary measurements.
Drafted and cut by hand
Measurements are taken and each client's figuration carefully noted, from which a personalised paper pattern is drafted. The pattern is laid onto the selected cloth, chalked in, and the cloth is cut by hand, with particular attention paid to matching any checks or stripes.
Balance and proportion
The fitting appointment is used to assess the fit of the pattern and allow Peter to refine the balance and proportion of the garment. Any alterations to the pattern and tailoring are noted, and any necessary re-cutting is specified.
Completed by hand
Once these adjustments are complete, the garments are lined and pressed, then prepared for buttoning and buttonholing, all of which are entirely hand-made and hand-finished. The initial appointment is followed by a first fitting, a second fitting and finally a collection appointment.
Every line is chalked by hand, directly onto the cloth.
The Peter Johnston process

Details that cannot be hurried.
Hand-worked details are added as each piece approaches completion, including finely hand-sewn buttonholes, real horn buttons, hand-stitched edges and topstitching, and discreet hand-sewn labels.
Peter Johnston works with an experienced team of cutters, tailors, finishers and pressers. All garments are hand-cut and hand-tailored, ensuring the highest standards of craftsmanship are maintained at every stage.

Correctly dressed for every occasion.
Peter Johnston is deeply versed in the traditions and etiquette of gentlemen's dress. In Scotland and England, formal occasions often call for a range of specific dress codes, from evening dress (black tie) and morning dress for weddings, ceremonies or racing, to full evening dress (tailcoat and white tie).
Each client is given the assurance that they are dressed correctly and appropriately for every occasion.
