HIGHLAND TREWS
Scottish Trews can be worn as Highland dress evening wear as a sophisticated alternative to the kilt – one of the most distinctive national costumes in the world. The old Highland trews, a sartorial work of art to resemble tight long hose, were worn only by gentlemen when out riding but today, they are just as likely to be seen today on New Yorks Fifth Avenue as they are in Edinburgh’s New Town.
Trews have distinctive features that require the skills of specialist bespoke cutters and tailors. PETER JOHNSTON expertly cuts and hand crafts fishtail back trews in the military style to traditional standards. Cut narrow in the leg with a slight spring worked over the foot to present a sloped hem, they are cut high in the body, about three inches above the natural waistline. In order not to break the check of the tartan setting, our trews are without side seams – a design feature that requires our bespoke cutters and tailors to labour with care and skill in creating trews that are both pleasing to the eye and a beautiful fit.
Another important feature of well-cut trews is a satisfactory perpendicular centre front line. At PETER JOHNSTON we take great care to cut trews where the vertical stripe of the tartan runs in a direct line from the waist, over the kneecap to the instep. Hand-stitched with the same meticulous care as every other aspect of our bespoke tailoring, PETER JOHNSTON trews are typically crafted from medium weight 13oz tartan.
Our bespoke trews service is by appointment in both the UK and USA. If you would like further information or to make a tailoring appointment to purchase, please contact us here or telephone: +44 131 225 4318.
