BESPOKE SHIRTS
Bespoke shirts, like skillfully cut bespoke tailoring, fit you like no other. That makes them wonderfully comfortable to wear – cut to your figure in a wide range of the highest quality cloths. They should be rotated in your wardrobe and encompass the full range of classic poplins through linen and blends to luxury two-fold 300’s.
An elegant shirt is an important part of your overall style. The shirt collar provides the focal point for the face. Peter Johnston will help you choose the fit, cloth and collar shape which best fits your build, face and style. We make elegant shirts for business, casual, sporting and formal from individually drafted paper patterns.
Made in Britain, all our bespoke shirts are cut from individually drafted paper patterns. All stitching is created using a single needle, buttons are made from the highest grade mother of pearl, a butterfly gusset is sewn at the bottom of each side seam for increased durability, shirt tails can be lengthened for modesty, and back yokes are four-piece split for flexibility, fit and comfort. All these details go into the creation of your own bespoke shirt.
The first and most important part of the process is cloth and pattern selection. Customers will be able to choose from a selection of sample books presented in a simple-to-follow format. We have around 650 fabrics to choose from in a selection of plains, stripes and checks. Cloth structures and yarn counts range from classic poplins, through linen and blends and two fold 80s to luxury two-fold 300’s (as with quality tailoring cloth, the higher the number the better quality the cloth).
We recommend that you choose your cloth and style for the season. Sea Island cotton makes shirts that feel soft, lightweight and cool in the summer heat. Shirts made from linen-cotton blends feel comfortable against the skin and allow your body to breathe. Button-down collars are light with an air of dressed down approachability.
For the connoisseur, we now offer ‘Cullinan’ from David & John Anderson, the finest shirting cloth ever produced. Cullinan shirt cloths have extremely high yarn counts, making shirts that feel light with a luxurious finish. Cullinan cloth is a ‘300 count 2-Fold’ – two single threads twisted together for improved strength. Made from the finest Egyptian cotton, Cullinan is produced from staple yarns measuring up to 39mm – considerably longer than the 20mm-30mm yarn from which most shirts are made. The longer the staple, the finer the spun yarn, the softer the handle of the fabric and the better the quality.
The exceptional fineness of Cullinan yarns allows for the production of shirting cloth with an extraordinary combination of softness and strength. Founded in Glasgow, Scotland in 1822, the Anderson family business quickly won a worldwide reputation as one of the great cotton producing firms. We are delighted to introduce these Scottish archive, Italian produced high quality luxurious fabrics on an exclusive basis into our bespoke shirt making service.
